It was designed to serve as a long range exploration vessel. From stem to stern, the Intrepid -class was one of the most advanced starships in Starfleet during its time. First introduced inthe Intrepid -class featured many unique innovations. The class employed a new warp core, variable geometry warp nacelles, and was the first to field both bio-neural gelpaks and the Emergency Medical Hologram system. Originally designed to counteract the subspace damage found to be occurring through the use of older warp drive technology, the new nacelle system also allowed the Intrepid to reach sustainable speed of nearly Warp Nearly three-hundred-fifty meters long, the Intrepid -class was built sleek and long, and by the late s it was third on the fastest top speed on record for a Starfleet vessel, falling behind the Sovereign -class and the ground-breaking Prometheus -class in field trials.
The tilting, wing-like nacelles could shift microns in their positions, emitting minutely adjustable warp fields that were more efficient and safer when traveling in subspace. This, combined with new verterion manufacturing and the APD Warp Core, made its propulsion systems highly advanced for its time. The Intrepid -class served multiple functions based on its load out, as well as size.
A starship could be seen on patrol or escort duty as easily as long-range exploration or survey. State of the art computers gave it unprecedented storage capacity, access speed, and rigor conditioning.
This, combined with a wide array of sensors covering a large amount of the exposed surface, made the Intrepid -class a premier ship of the line for Starfleet 's scientific endeavors. Fast, agile, and well armed, these science vessels were among the more capable multi-role platforms when faced with combat situations.
Advanced shielding and Type-X phaser arrays equipped admirably, with several representatives of the class serving during the Dominion War with amazing success. Very fast and maneuverable while at the same time heavily armed, the Intrepid was the light cruiser of the fleet. Starfleet Vessel Enterprise NX Ships of the Nova Class - Volume I.The Intrepid -class starship was a Federation design that entered service in the latter half of the 24th century. Starfleet 's shipbuilding policy of the last century has emphasized ever larger, more capable designs capable of carrying out a wide variety of missions within a single hull, often simultaneously.
However, this has led to a gradual fall in the numbers of vessels which can be fielded - where the Excelsior class numbers well over a hundred, the Ambassador class were limited to a production run of twenty six, and the Galaxy class was limited to six ships initially, though this has since been expanded. While the exploration capacity of these classes is still sufficient to meet the tasks demanded of them, the lack of numbers has led to a certain restriction in flexibility.
Losses among the Galaxy class have also emphasized that placing "all the eggs in one basket" is not necessarily the wisest choice. The Intrepid design was fielded partly to correct this situation. Although the limited size meant that the vessel would have much lower overall capabilities than the Galaxy class, this was to be in some part offset by the use of the latest technology. A top cruise speed some three times that of the Galaxy would further enhance the vessel's exploration capabilities.
Diplomatic functions would be more problematic - hosting such functions requires supporting large numbers of extra personnel, and the Intrepid class simply would not have the room for this. Her diplomatic capabilities are therefore limited to relatively small events generally involving Federation negotiations with a single party.
The Intrepid's combat role was also somewhat limited by her size; unable to carry large numbers of torpedoes or high power phaser banks, Starfleet settled on a scouting and support mission for the ship. Fitted out with Type VIII phaser arrays and single fire torpedo tubes, the Intrepid would be capable of engaging vessels the size of a Bird of Prey one-on-one.
Her high speed and maneuverability combined with the advanced sensor system would also make her a perfect platform to conduct long range reconnaissance missions ahead of fleet operations. Within a major fleet battle the Intrepid would also act in support of larger ships, harrassing enemy fleet units and drawing fire away from larger Federation ships.
Development of the intrepid class went relatively smoothly in the early and mid stages, but a major problem arose in with the discovery that the energy emissions of standard warp drives caused considerable cumulative damage to the structure of subspace. Starfleet called for all designs then in progress to be modified to eliminate this effect, and it was decided to use the Intrepid class as a test bed for this technology.
After some experimentation it was found that the effect could be avoided by using a warp field with a much elongated Z-axis, combined with complex warp field modulation and the utilization of new materials during the manufacture of warp coils. This has led to the ships saucer section having the forward ellipse now becoming common on Federation designs.
Building was suspended on the class while the designs were subjected to intense scrutiny; after a year without results the Intrepid project was resumed. It was subsequently discovered that Voyager was in fact displaced to the other side of the Galaxy by an alien technology.
After struggling to return home for nearly seven years, Voyager finally made it back to Earth via a Borg transwarp conduit. One feature unique to the Intrepid class among Federation Starships of this size is the ability to land on a planetary surface.
This feature has been incorporated after several incidents in which transporters, and shuttle craft have been unable to operate through exotic environmental conditions during evacuations or other surface related operations.

Focusing on improving hull strength, adding the quantum slipstream driveand taking new technologies from the modern Horizon and Vesta class starships, the Intrepid Mk. III or Refit brought the aging Intrepid up to modern specifications as an explorer, and the first starship to undergo the transformation, USS Victorywas relaunched later that year.

The interior design focused on the bridge, which set the tone for the rest of ship. Throughout the design process, the main goal was to make it new and appealing while still holding in part to the same familiar design. Voyager special effect shots were done with both miniatures and CGI. The miniature shots of the Voyager model were used as a benchmark to improve the CGI shots.
By late midway through season threecertain exterior shots were fully CGI. Voyager was launched in The crew's first orders were to track down a Maquis ship in the Badlands. An alien force called the Caretaker transported both Voyager and the Maquis vessel across 70, light-years to the Delta Quadrantdamaging Voyager and killing several crewmembers including the medical staff, helm officer Stadi, first officer Cavit and the chief engineer.
Voyager and the Maquis ship are ultimately stranded in the Delta Quadrant to prevent a genocide of the Ocampansa species on a nearby planet under the Caretaker's protection from the Kazon, an antagonistic race native to the Delta Quadrant who seek the resources of the Ocampa. Captain Janeway orders the destruction of the device that could transport Voyager and the Maquis vessel home, thereby protecting the Ocampa.
Stranded, and with the Maquis ship also destroyed, both crews integrate and work together for the anticipated year journey home. The intended crew complement was Starfleet personnel,  though it held for its inaugural mission.
Starfleet Command eventually becomes aware of the ship's presence in the Delta Quadrant and is later able to establish regular communication. Voyager was equipped with 47 bio-neural gel packs and two holodecks.
Like the Galaxy Class, Voyager 's warp nacelles were below the primary hull. The ship also was capable of planetary landings. It instead would eject the warp core as seen in the season 4 episode " Day of Honor " and the season 7 episode " Renaissance Man ".
Voyager also had an Emergency Medical Hologram EMH programmed with a library of more than five million different medical treatments from 2, medical references and 47 physicians.
The ship was initially equipped with 38 photon torpedoes with type VI warheads and two tricobalt devicesboth of which are used to destroy the Caretaker's array. Voyager housed five standard torpedo launchers two fore, two aft, one ventral and was able to fire up to four torpedoes per launcher at once. During the years in the Delta Quadrant, the ship is augmented with custom, non-spec upgrades and modifications, some of which are modified from technology of other cultures, an example being Seven of Nine 's alcoves and the Delta Flyer which both utilize modified Borg technology.
Several pieces of technology from the future were also installed in the final episode, courtesy of Admiral Janeway who went back in time to bring Voyager home.
The Borg are a major source of technological upgrades conducted on Voyager. Cargo bay 2 is equipped with several Borg alcoves when Captain Janeway forms an alliance with the Borg and several Borg are forced to work aboard Voyager during the alliance. An important shuttlecraft in many episodes, and operated from the USS Voyagerwas a spacecraft called the Delta Flyer.
