Shooter comfort is also considered by way of an Inflex recoil pad and removable muzzle brake to manage recoil. Heck, even the straight-feed rotary magazine is high-performance. Users can further screw-adjust the trigger pull to between 3 and 5 pounds by removing the bottom metal from the gun to access the adjustment screw.

One of the unique visible features of the X-Bolt is the Bolt Unlock Button that works in conjunction with the two-position tang safety. This configuration eliminates the common three-position tang safety that many shooters either find confusing or simply ignore entirely.

Though it takes a little range time to get accustomed to pressing the button to safely unload a live round, its location is where your thumb is anyhow when cycling the action, and pressing it quickly becomes intuitive. The X-Lock system uses four screws per base, replacing the traditional two-screw system.

This rifle has a really comfortable and lively stock. It provides a really good gripping surface, even when wet. Recoil is also really well managed on this rifle. Where some manufacturers handle kick by putting ever thicker and squishier buttpads on their guns, Browning actually engineered a solution with its Inflex recoil pad.

Those cells are part of an internal skeleton with wedge-shaped ribs designed using the concept of directional deflection. When a Browning with the Inflex recoil pad is fired, the pad collapses, but instead of simply smashing to the rear, the geometry of the directional ribs pull the comb down and away from your face. Weatherby achieved much the same with the exaggerated Monte Carlo shape of their stock comb; the Inflex does it with less showmanship.

Further helping to tame recoil is a muzzle brake with holes degrees around. If you can manage the recoil without the brake, Browning includes a cap you can thread on in place of the brake. Unfortunately, the barrel is too thin to take threading normally found for suppressors, requiring a custom-fitting option to use one. The trigger is user-adjustable from 3 to 5 pounds pull, but the adjustment screw is sealed at the factory. Initially, the X-Bolt HCS wanted to two-group, meaning it was making two distinct groups about a half-inch apart with the same aiming point.

After 20 rounds and some good cleaning, things settled down and the two-grouping stopped entirely, suggesting that this particular X-Bolt may have benefited from some type of barrel break-in regimen. Practice all you want with the brake, but if you intend to not use it in the field, do your final sight-in without it. The trigger is a dream. Its wide blade is smooth on the finger and it hardly moves when firing the gun.Buy Together and Save.

The medium height rings should be tall enough as long as you have a standard barrel contour not a bull or target barrel. Your walk away with a magnificent rifle. And everything else you need for your hunt too. A-TACS is a hybrid pattern, employing organic pixilation from a palate of naturally occurring terrain colors. It uses small patterns woven into larger patterns to break up outlines at both close and far distances. Having used it before, I knew it would be an excellent choice for the terrain.

Freezing is a quick way to end your hunt, but nobody wants bulk either. So step one was a jacket. Temperatures ranged from 25 degrees Fahrenheit to 70 over the course of a day, and this jacket was plenty from the 50 to 25 range.

It functioned well both during movement, and sitting while glassing for long periods. The biggest thing that impressed me was its wind-sheering ability. While remaining breathable, this jacket blocked the wind and kept me warm during long glassing sessions.

Needless to say, I tested the wind blocking ability at 50 mph in the early morning chill, and it performed admirably. This is my new favorite hunting outer layer. I tend to run a little on the hot side, so I avoid insulated pants. The Backcountry pants are built from a 2-layer stretch fabric shell bonded to a woven stretch fleece. This material is quiet like the grave, and also does an excellent job of stopping wind. The pockets are well thought-out, with zipper enclosures on each of them.

There is nothing worse than moving across difficult terrain quietly, and then wondering where your rangefinder fell out. These pants are a win, too. Rounding out the package were the Hellfire Glove and Trailhead Beanie. No soldier worth his salt leaves home without a beanie, and this one was great. Built of the same wind sheer material as the pants, it did a fantastic job. The gloves proved to be incredibly waterproof, and the leather palms held up great. A long section of our movement was through a burned out area, littered with downed logs.

The gloves got more abuse thrown at them in one day than most would in a season and walked away without a scratch on them. The bolt is incredibly smooth for a factory rifle, and the degree throw makes for rapid follow-up shots.

Browning calls this trigger the feather trigger, and that is an appropriate moniker. It is screw adjustable from 5 pounds to 3 pounds, and mine out of the box was right at 3.

There is no takeup, just a clean break.

BAR Mark III - Hell's Canyon Speed

Among hunting rifles, this is the one to beat. Visually, the rifle is stunning. The A-TACS theme continues with the rifle stock, which also features soft touch grip surfaces in the areas you hold the rifle. The buttpad is an excellent fit, and dampens the little recoil the muzzlebrake lets past.It seems the 6. In part, this is due to the widespread availability of high-quality ammunition tipped with superior bullet designs. When fed into a Browning rifle, the possibilities become endless. The most important aspect of the rifle aside from a quality barrel would be the stock.

The shooter has more interface with the stock than any other rifle component. The design of the stock is paramount to the success of the mission. A properly designed stock assists in recoil mitigation and ensures proper eye relief for a parallax-free view that is critical for accuracy. A quality stock must also be rigid to ensure shot to shot repeatability. All these things and more can be found in a variety of stocks, but one of the best I have discovered is the McMillan Game Scout.

McMillan has been producing stocks for over 40 years and is an industry leader with its fiberglass composite stocks. More than half of my personal rifles are bedded in McMillan stocks and I typically have one or two stocks on order with McMillan at any given time.

The McMillan Game Scout stock came pillar bedded and had a great fit to the Browning X-Bolt action, coupled with the Browning detachable magazine bottom metal. The rotary magazine holds four rounds and is very easy to load.

I experienced zero failure to feed during the months of shooting during my review. In addition to the short bolt throw, the properly designed magazine provided very smooth and reliable feeding with a variety of factory ammunition.

Regardless of your intended application for any rifle, it must operate smoothly and reliability to earn its place in any gun safe. The Browning X-Bolt exceeds the standard. I tuned the trigger on my rifle to 3 lbs.

The Browning triggers are user friendly β€” the easiest factory adjustable triggers on the market today. A simple removal of the bottom metal to access the trigger allows you to tune the trigger pull weight by tightening or loosening the Allen screw directly in front of the trigger shoe.

I recoated the Allen crew with finger nail polish to prevent the screw from possibly walking out later as it comes coated from the factory after initial setting. The threaded muzzle, with muzzle brake and cap, is a very nice upgrade on any rifle. The Browning rifle comes with a fluted, heavy Sporter contour steel barrel. Browning also polishes the chamber in each barrel to ensure smooth extraction. The rifle I tested came with a twist barrel, but models offered after will have a twist to help stabilize the longer, heavier bullets.

The muzzle is cut with a deep crown and comes threaded for attaching a muzzle device or suppressor. It even includes a muzzle brake and threaded cap to protect the threads to offer the shooter options. The barrel and action both receive a burnt bronze Cerakote finish to protect the steel surfaces from corrosion and rust. This allows the rifle to be used in a variety of climates.

This would change your drop at yards from 8. I prefer to have the shorter barrel and account for the extra drop of. I was fortunate enough to test this rifle for several months, which accounted for four to five range sessions per month. Both brands offer a great bullet that is designed for optimal performance on big game animals in a variety of applications. I was able to shoot a sub one-inch, five-shot group at yards as well.

This is exceptional accuracy for a factory rifle with factory ammunition achieved without the added expense and time of handloading. Browning has put together a rifle that will suit the needs of everyone from novice rifleman all the way up to a veteran shooter looking to up his game.
